amron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD Lens for Nikon Z

The Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Nikon Z Lens is a versatile standard zoom lens designed for APS-C Nikon Z mirrorless cameras. It combines a useful zoom range with a constant f/2.8 maximum aperture. As a result, you can capture landscapes, portraits, street scenes and everyday moments with one lens.

Moreover, the built-in Vibration Compensation (VC) system helps reduce camera shake during handheld shooting. The RXD autofocus motor also provides fast and quiet focusing for photos and videos. Therefore, this lens is a practical option for photographers and content creators who want flexibility without carrying several lenses.

Design and Build Quality

Compact Design of the Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Nikon Z Lens

The Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD features a compact design for everyday photography. The Nikon Z version weighs approximately 540g, making it suitable for travel and regular outdoor use.

Furthermore, its 67mm filter thread supports a wide range of compatible filters. You can use suitable UV, polarising and neutral density filters for different shooting conditions.

The lens also features moisture-resistant construction and a protective fluorine coating. These features provide added protection during regular outdoor use. However, they do not make the lens fully waterproof.

Performance and Image Quality

Sharp Results with the Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Nikon Z Lens

The constant f/2.8 maximum aperture allows more light into the camera than many standard variable-aperture zoom lenses. Consequently, it helps when shooting indoors, during evening sessions or in other low-light conditions.

In addition, the wide aperture can create a soft background that makes portraits stand out. The optical design uses 16 elements in 12 groups to support detailed images and clear contrast.

The 17-70mm focal length range offers flexibility for many subjects. At the wide end, you can capture landscapes and group photos. At the telephoto end, you can frame portraits and distant details more tightly.

Key Features

Versatile 17-70mm Zoom Range

The lens covers focal lengths from 17mm to 70mm. On a Nikon Z APS-C camera, this provides a full-frame equivalent field of view of approximately 25.5-105mm.

Therefore, you can move from wide scenes to tighter compositions without changing lenses. This makes it useful for travel, street photography, portraits and everyday shooting.

Constant f/2.8 Maximum Aperture

The maximum aperture stays at f/2.8 throughout the zoom range. Moreover, it gives you greater control over background blur and exposure in dim light.

Built-In Vibration Compensation

Tamron's VC system helps reduce blur caused by camera shake. As a result, you can capture steadier handheld photos and smoother-looking footage in suitable shooting conditions.

Fast and Quiet RXD Autofocus

The RXD motor supports fast and quiet autofocus. Furthermore, its low operating noise makes the lens suitable for many video recording situations.

The lens also helps control focus breathing, which can reduce changes in framing when you adjust focus during video recording.

Close-Up Photography

The minimum object distance is 0.19m at the wide end and 0.39m at the telephoto end. Because of this, you can photograph food, products, flowers and other nearby subjects with ease.

Connectivity and Compatibility

Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Nikon Z Lens Compatibility

This version is designed for APS-C mirrorless cameras with the Nikon Z mount. Before buying, check that your camera uses a compatible Nikon Z mount and supports the lens's intended APS-C format.

The lens also supports firmware updates through the Tamron Lens Utility, subject to the relevant device and software requirements.

Additionally, check your camera's compatibility with autofocus, stabilisation and video functions. Performance may vary depending on the camera body and firmware version.

Battery and Power

Power Requirements for the Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Nikon Z Lens

The lens does not require a separate battery. Instead, it receives power from the compatible camera body for autofocus and electronic functions.

Consequently, your shooting time depends on the camera's battery capacity, settings and usage. Carrying a spare camera battery can help during long photo sessions or video shoots.
